Inspiration Behind This Painting
This painting is based on a vision. In the vision, I saw a beautiful mask lying on golden desert sand. There was broken barbed wire near the mask.
My Interpretation
All of us have many identities. It could depend on the roles we play or depend on who we see ourselves to be. No matter how honorable or beautiful that identity is, it is as fragile and temporary as the clay mask. There will be a season when you will shed that identity and when that identity, the mask, comes off, it will hurt. Like barbed wires, they pressed into your heart, and they kept you from other relationships and opportunities. Somehow, these identities, even the most beautiful ones, have become so much a part of you that it might be painful to take it out. But taking out those barbed wires is the work of God’s Spirit and that process, although painful, will set you free. Freedom – that’s your portion! Freedom in knowing that your identity is in Christ, child of God, is incomparable to all the other identities you identify with. The butterfly was not part of the vision but as I was painting this I was reminded of a poem and painting that one of my artist friends in the UK had sent to me a couple of years back. She wrote, “We emerge with gilded wings, strong enough to fly”. Child of God, it’s your time to let God unveil your real identity in Him and take flight with gilded wings, free to embrace all that God has in store for you. It doesn’t depend on how people see you or how you see yourself. It depends on how God sees you.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name
