3 Questions to emotional healing

Everyone believes in something. Beliefs are the fundamental building blocks of our worldview. It defines how we act, think, and speak. There are three fundamental things that determine our perspectives

  • Our beliefs about God
  • Our beliefs about ourselves
  • Our beliefs about the enemy of our soul

Someone might say I don’t believe in a God, and I don’t believe in an enemy and put a larger emphasis on self. They will have an atheistic worldview. Yet another might hold certain beliefs on all three issues, and they will have a different worldview. In the Christian worldview, it is essential to understand the nature of beliefs one has about these three entities. A proper understanding of these three entities helps renew our mind and bring emotional healing. What are your beliefs about God? What are your beliefs about yourself, and what are your beliefs about the enemy of your soul? Answer them honestly, and you will be able to understand why you have certain fears or certain hangups. Our past traumas and experiences can skew our understanding of these three entities, but it is never too late to gain a fresh understanding.

We are emotional beings, and our emotional healing comes from walking in freedom. However, true freedom comes only through truth. We often have a partial understanding of truth and sometimes even get deceived in understanding the truth. I have personally experienced this disconnect often. One thing that has helped me to recover emotionally, time after time, is to consider the truthfulness of my beliefs about God, myself, and the enemy(Satan). My reference point is always the Bible. The Bible is God’s Word, alive today, and fully able to breathe life into us. I replace the lies I have come to believe about the 3 entities with what the Bible tells about them. The goal is to replace any lies with the truth of God’s Word.

Here is a sample of what it looks like when I consider the 3 questions:

What does the Bible tell me about God’s character?  “The Bible says He is compassionate, slow to anger, full of mercy. He is just and will do justice. He is righteous, and there is no darkness in Him. He doesn’t want anyone to perish. He came to give abundant life. He loves people, and He died for the whole world.  The blood of Jesus is powerful. He is for me and not against me. He is sovereign, and He sees everything. He will never leave me nor forsake me. He cares about every detail of my life. Nothing is impossible for Him. He Heals. He brings life.”

What does the Bible tell about me? “I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I am loved, redeemed, and chosen. I am forgiven. I am a Child of God, a princess in His kingdom. I am a royal priesthood. I am celebrated. I am unique. I am a city on the hill top. I am the salt of the world and a light of the world. I am an ambassador of reconciliation. I am a vessel filled with God’s glory. I am the temple of the Holy Spirit.”

What does the Bible tell about Satan, the enemy of my soul? Once again, use the Bible to answer this question, but this time, I also remind myself of the antidote. “He comes to steal, kill and destroy, but Jesus came to give abundant life so I will have abundant life. He is the accusor, but my sins are forgiven by the blood of Jesus. He is a liar and the father of lies, but Jesus is truth, God’s truth has set me free, and I don’t have to believe in the lies of the enemy. He roars around, waiting to devour anyone, so stay alert and resist the devil, and  he will flee. Spiritual battle is real, but He who is with me is greater than he that is of the world. “

Renewing your mind like this is important to break free from the lies of the enemy. It will help with aligning your mind and emotions with God’s perfect will for your life. This is not a one-time process. This can be an ongoing rhythm in your life, taking account of the lies and replacing them with the truth of God’s Word.

What do I do if I don’t know verses from the Bible?

Start small. Find one verse for each of the 3 entities and begin there. We all have to start somewhere. If you have a specific fear, grief, or trauma that you want to overcome, find a verse for that specific issue. Google them to begin with, but then go to the actual Bible and read them out loud, and commit to memory. It is okay if you can’t remember the exact words. Just try to  remember the core meaning and purpose of the verse. Use it every time you want to renew your mind. Expand as you go. The easiest way to remember God’s Word is to spend some time with God and His words every day. The Holy Spirit of God is your friend. Ask for His help. Build that into your daily rhythm. This is equivalent to feeding your soul with food. Just as your physical body needs food, your emotional and spiritual body needs soul food. This will dramatically shift your life. Reach out to me or another trusted, biblically rooted friend if you need help.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2
